As someone who normally counts down the days until cooler weather, this year I found myself hoping that summer would hold on just a little while longer. Perhaps that's why this summer recap is being published in mid-September...I am in deep denial.
Here's what I read in July and August! Happy reading :)
James | Historical Fiction, 5/5
If you have somehow missed this book, I implore you to stop what you're doing and pick it up now. It is stunning. No Huckleberry Finn pre-reading required!
I started this book a few months ago and knew it wasn't the right moment for me to read it. I am so glad I came back to it. This book is beautifully written and was nothing like what I was expecting. I was familiar with Huckleberry Finn, but had only read Tom Sawyer. I wasn't sure what to expect from this retelling, but it is incredible.

Pink Glass Houses | Thriller, 4/5
I devoured this audiobook!! It was the perfect binge-worthy summer read. If you loved BIG LITTLE LIES and love rich people problems, this book for you.
Thank you to libro.fm for my ALC!
The Second Ending | Fiction, 5/5
This is one of my favorite books of the year. I adored this book. I found Prudence to be such a lovable character. This book pulled in my heartstrings and made me wish I still played the piano. I loved the way that Hoffman made even potentially unlikable characters redeemable. Perfect for fans of IONA IVERSON’S RULES FOR COMMUTING.
Tehrangeles | Fiction, 3/5
Okay, firstly, the cover of this book is incredible and the reason why I bumped it to the top of my TBR. I really love rich people problems, but this one felt a little too scattered. This is also truly a COVID novel, which I didn’t know going in. The characters are fun and over the top but I wish there had been a little more development.
Thank you Pantheon for my copy!
The God of the Woods | Thriller, 5/5
This might be my current favorite read of 2024. I loved the way this story unfolded, and while there are lots of characters and plot points, I never felt lost. Moore's writing is stunning and made this book nearly impossible to put down. This is a character-driven novel, so while the plot plods along, it is much more about the characters. I highly, highly recommend this book!
Middle of the Night | Thriller, 3/5
This book was fine, but not what I expect from Sager. I found the writing to have too many flashbacks within flashbacks and the twist to be too clean. The characters helped move the story along but didn’t have any depth. This book could have been so good, but overall fell flat for me.
There's Always This Year | Memoir, 5/5
This is a book about basketball. If you are someone who, like me, has spent your life studying the power of sports, you will understand that a book about basketball is about so much more than a book about basketball. This is a stunning book about home, nostalgia, and growing up. This is a book about basketball, but it is also a love letter to Ohio, and the pieces of our lives that have molded us, and the places we love, into who we are today. I especially enjoyed it on audio.
The Match | Romcom, 2/5
I probably should have DNFed this book. I found the characters too immature and the story too cheesy. But I did love the dogs.
Thank you to libro.fm for my copy.
Same As It Ever Was | Fiction, 5/5
Cried on an airplane reading the last chapter of this book. It is stunning. If you like family sagas and character driven novels, this book was written for you.
The Unforgettable Loretta James | Historical Fiction, 3/5
I was really excited about the storyline of this book, but I felt like it was trying to do too much. I would have loved a deeper look at Loretta and her backstory. For being a longer book, it felt rather rushed at the end.
Pearce Oysters | Fiction, 4/5
I refused to label a book set in the 2000's as historical. But, yes, technically this is historical fiction.
I found this book to be so unique and important. I love a family saga and really liked the way this story circled around a family as well as their community. The characters are messy but lovable. I remember when the oil spill happened and I am glad to see a book about it.
Thank you to libro.fm for my ALC.
Go Lightly | Fiction, 3.5/5
This is a good literary beach read. I really enjoyed the writer but wish the story would have been a little tighter. If you like messy characters and Sally Rooney, I think this book is for you!
Thank you to the publisher for my copy!
Headshot | Fiction, 4/5
In a post-Barbie movie era, I love all of the examinations of girlhood we are seeing represented. This book had been on my radar for a while but I bumped it to the top of my TBR after it was long listed for the Booker Prize.
The structure of this book is so creative and I felt like set a perfect stage to learn about each of the six girls. If you love coming of age novels, character driven stories, and sports, I would highly recommend this one.
The Wedding People | Fiction, 5/5
This is my book of the summer.
I absolutely loved this book. This book handled such heavy topics with beautiful glimmers of hope. I found the characters to be equal parts endearing and funny. This book will stay with me for a long time.
Sociopath | Memoir, 3/5
Giving a star rating to a memoir is always tricky, but I feel stuck on this one. While I found the scientific content interesting, I found this book to be too self centered, even for a memoir. Overall, I’m walking away from this book with a lot of mixed feelings.
The Paradise Problem | Romcom, 4/5
Sometimes you just need a lighthearted beach read, and Christina Lauren are most often the solution. I really loved the main characters in the book and the island setting was very dreamy! Not the most developed characters, but the story was so fun that this didn’t matter.
